This feature is only available on the Volume plan. If you enable this feature we're confident the additional revenue will easily outweigh the cost of the higher plan.

Charging for Insurance or Damage Protection for rentals on your store can be a great way to earn additional revenue for your orders. Some might even consider it an "upsell".

Each industry and business is different, so please assess your own situation before deciding whether this feature is beneficial for you. If you decide it's worthwhile, Product Rentals Pro makes it easy to offer optional insurance or damage protection for your rental orders, with customizable pricing.

Be sure to be clear on the regulations of your country and your industry before offering this service, and before you set the terms for your insurance or damage protection product.

How does it work?

If activated, the PRP Rental Widget will include a checkbox just above the add to cart button on your product page, allowing the customer to optionally add the insurance/damage protection product to their rental.

When the customer ticks the box and then clicks the add to cart button (e.g. "Rent Now"), two products will get added to the cart. The item being rented as well as the product you've created for insurance/damage protection.

How to set up/activate insurance/damage protection

  1. Create a Product in your store to represent the type of insurance or damage protection service you're offering. This is done the same way your normally set up Products in Shopify. Be sure to untick "This product requires shipping". If you want to automate different price points depending on the value of the associated rental, then you'll need to create variants for the product. You could either create an option named "Fee" and then set each option value as the price of the variant. Or you might create an option named "Level" and set the values as 1, 2, 3... or A, B, C... etc. Then set the prices of each variant.

  2. Complete the Settings - Add-Ons form. A guide for each field is in the section below.

Add-On Settings Form Fields

Insurance/Damage Protection Fields

Activate

When checked, and the configuration is saved, the insurance/damage protection option will appear on the Rental Widget for all rental products on your store.

Name of add-on

A title for your Insurance/Damage Protection offering. The only place this displays is as the title in the "More Info" popup.

Checkbox text

The text that appears beside the insurance/damage protection checkbox in the Rental Widget.

More information popup text

Text that appears in the modal/popup that appears when a customer clicks "More Info" in the insurance/damage protection part of the Rental Widget. This would normally used to provide high-level terms of the offer, why customers should include it, etc. For anything more detailed, you can include a link within the text to a full page on your website. A link can be included with this syntax: [link text](https://url.com)

Select Insurance Product

Choose a product from your Shopify store that represents your insurance/damage protection offer. This should be a product with requires shipping set to off and inventory tracking disabled. It doesn't need to be imported into Product Rentals Pro (in fact it's better if it isn't).

If the Product doesn't have Variants then there's no more you need to do. You can Save, and your configuration is complete.

If the Product has Variants, then more options appear.

Variant Rules & Thresholds - Default Variant

Select the Variant from your chosen Product to be the default Variant used when a customer chooses to add insurance/damage protection to their rental item.

Variant Rules & Thresholds - Base thresholds on

If you're using price thresholds to determine which Variant should apply to a rental, then this selection will determine which price to use.

The rental product's minimum price: The lowest price of any Variant on the rental product

The price of the selected variant: The price of the Variant selected by the customer

The reason you might want to use the rental Product's minimum price, is that this is often going to be more tied to the underlying value of the Product, whereas the selected Variant may be priced on the rental duration as well.

Variant Rules & Thresholds - Thresholds

A list of thresholds which allow you to select different Variants of the insurance/damage protection Product, based on the price. Effectively it allows you to charge more or less for insurance based on the value of the rental.

For example, for items where the rental fee is under $100, you might want to charge $10 for insurance. Between $100 and $150, $15 for insurance, and above $150, $20 for insurance.

You would select your $10 Variant as the Default Variant.

You would add a threshold with When price greater than set to 100, and select your $15 Variant.

You would add another threshold with When price greater than set to 150, and select your $20 Variant.

Increasing Uptake of your Insurance/Damage Protection offering

Go to Settings from the main Product Rentals Pro navigation menu, and then choose Add-Ons, to go to the Add-Ons screen. The Settings - Add-ons screen loads.

By default, the insurance/damage protection part of the Rental Widget is plain and doesn't stand out much. More can be done to bring it to customers attention and hopefully increase the uptake. This can be done with CSS, but for how you can grab the customer's attention at the moment before they add to cart.
