An overview of managing rentals in Product Rentals Pro

A rental in Product Rentals Pro is an intention to lend products to a customer for a set start and end date.

In other words, a rental can't have products within it that have different rental dates. To support this, separate rentals must be created. Fortunately, Product Rentals Pro takes care of that automatically when an Order comes through your Shopify checkout.

How are Rentals Created?

Rentals are created in Product Rentals Pro whenever a customer places an Order on your store for items using a product page template with the Product Rentals Pro block in it.

A rental is created for every unique combination of rental dates that make up the Order.

Example 1: An Order is placed with a single rental item in the Order. This will create a rental in Product Rentals Pro for that item.

Example 2: An Order is placed with 2 different rental items in the Order. One item is being rented with dates later this month, and one item is for dates next month. As the dates don't align, two separate rentals will be created in Product Rentals Pro for this Order.

Example 3: An Order is placed with 2 different rental items in the Order. The customer has selected the exact same dates/duration for the 2 items. A single rental is created in Product Rentals Pro, with both items included in the rental.

Separate rentals are created for items with different rental dates, as they will need to be delivered or collected separately, on different dates. To make this easy, Product Rentals Pro separates these so that dispatch and returns can be tracked separately.

Each rental is linked to the Shopify Order which it was generated from, meaning updates to information on the Order, and Fulfillments on the Order will automtically update the information on the rental.

It also means the following rental status updates occur:

  1. If the Order is cancelled/refunded, the status of the rental will automatically update to Cancelled.

  2. If the Order is fulfilled, the status of the rental will automatically update to Dispatched.
