PRP Cart Manager

An App Embed that helps manage the customer Cart, specific to rental products & settings

We recommend enabling the PRP Cart Manager App Embed on all stores using Product Rentals Pro.

The two main functions it provides are a cart item timer, and removal of orphaned insurance and security deposit products when their connected rental product(s) have been removed from the cart. For an explanation of these functions, expand the tabs below.

Cart Item Timer

You can put a time limit on how long a customer can have a rental product in their cart. The time limit can be set on the Store Settings screen.

When the PRP Cart Manager is enabled, a rental product will automatically be removed from a customer's cart on your store, X minutes after it was first added, where X is the value of the setting you applied on the Store Settings screen.

We recommend setting a time for this, somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes. Certain types of rental businesses may want to go slightly higher.

Without this, it is left to Shopify to decide how long items stay in the cart, which will typically be days or longer. This means a customer will be able to check out with items added to the cart a long time ago, even though the availability of the rental product may have changed in that time due to other bookings.

The PRP Cart Manager ensures that a customer must confirm availability via the rental widget calendar again, rather than booking a rental based on availability that might be hours old (when they first added it to cart).

You might also enable it as a motivator for customers to check out quickly, improving your conversion rate.

Please note that adding to cart does not "reserve" the product/variant for the customer for the dates selected. It will still appear as available for other customers until the order has been placed.

Removal of Orphaned Products

If you've configured the optional insurance upsell, or security deposits, there may be additional products automatically added to the cart along with the rental product.

If the customer then chooses to remove the rental product from their cart, the insurance / security deposit product(s) will effectively be orphans. They shouldn't remain in the cart, so the PRP Cart Manager detects this and automatically removes them.

Enabling the Cart Manager in your Theme

  1. Go to Online Store > Themes in your Shopify admin menu

  2. Go to "App Embeds" from the left side navigation, which is represented by the icon of three squares and a plus symbol.

  3. Turn on the toggle for PRP - Cart Manager

That's it! The Product Rentals Pro Cart Manager is now activated on your store.

If the time limit is reached whilst the customer is still on your store website, a popup will appear to let them know that the Product was removed from their cart.

Warning Customers about the Time Limit

We recommend making customers aware of the time limit. A couple of ways to do this, might be:

  • Including it in the text either above or below the rental calendar, via the text configurable within the Rental Widget.

  • Including it beneath the list of items on the Cart page. This can be done by adding a standard "Rich text" block beneath the "Items" block on your Cart page template. The text might be something like: Rental items are automatically removed from your cart, 20 minutes after being added.

A future release of Product Rentals Pro will have an optional floating bar with a countdown timer, so customers always know how long they have before the Product is removed from their cart.
