Shopify Order Creation

Options for creating a Shopify Order when manually creating a rental in Product Rentals Pro

When manually creating a rental in Product Rentals Pro, the first part of the rental form asks you whether you'd like to also create a Shopify Order, and if so, what type.

Reasons you would want to create a Shopify Order in conjunction with the rental:

  • So you can take payment for the rental via Shopify, or some other system that connects to Shopify and requires a Shopify Order to exist.

  • To have the rental be included in any Shopify statistics and reports, such as sales reports - even if payment is taken outside of Shopify.

  • You want to be able to use Shopify's fulfillment features for the rental/Order - i.e. entering a tracking number and having it sent to the customer.

Reasons you might not want to create a Shopify Order in conjunction with the rental:

  • You've already accepted payment in cash or via another method and you aren't concerned with it being incorporated into stats or reports provided by Shopify.

  • The rental is being done for free, or as a collaboration - for marketing purposes or otherwise. No payment is required and you also don't want the rental affecting your Shopify order counts, as it's not a sale to a customer.

Options for creating the Shopify Order

If you've decided you want a Shopify Order to be created along with the manually created rental, the next thing is to decide which of the following types.

Draft Order

Draft Orders don't appear within your Orders list in Shopify. They are separate type of object and they have their own ID, different to the IDs of actual Orders.

Draft Orders can be useful, in these cases (among others):

  • You want to add some custom discounts to the Order before finalising it.

  • You want to add some extra Products to the Order that aren't rentals, or some custom line items, before finalising it.

  • You don't want the Order to appear in your Orders list or included in your stats until payment has been made.

  • You want an Order to be saved now, as partially completed, with a view to making changes or finishing it later.

  • You don't want any automated flows, apps, notifications or other processes connected to your Shopify Orders to be triggered until a later date or until you've made manual adjustments to the Order created by Product Rentals Pro.

Order marked as Paid

Will create an Order within Shopify but with it already marked as Paid. Use this if you've received payment for the rental already, outside of Shopify - whether that be cash received, bank transfer received, an order paid for on another marketplace where you list your items, etc.

Order marked as Payment Pending

Will create an Order within Shopify, with payment still expected. From here, you can accept payment in a number of ways:

  • Send an invoice to the customer via the Shopify Order screen.

  • Enter the card details yourself via the Shopify Order screen (i.e. if customer is in-person or providing card details over the phone).

  • Via Shopify POS - by locating the relevant order within the POS system and accepting payment on the POS.

Keep in mind that you can link/unlink a rental to/from a Shopify Order at any time.
