Add-Ons - Upsells

Easily sell consumables/non-rental products or additional services along with a rental

Upsells allow you to increase order totals by offering additional items to customers as part of booking a rental.

It differs from other Upsell apps in that's integrated into the PRP Rental Widget and appears as a natural part of the rental booking process, rather than an after-thought or something that is easily dismissed, like typical Upsell popups.

Upsells are only available on the Growth plan and above

This will generally be used to sell consumables that fit well with the product being rented. They're usually products that are always in stock and won't be returned - hence don't need calendar availability to be displayed. For example, beer sold with a beer tap rental, fashion tape sold with a formal gown rental or suction cups sold with a breast bump rental.

They might be used for add-on services, that have a cost-attached, like an equipment set up fee or a personalised expert video-call. They could also be for services that are always required, but that you always want to be presented as a different cart/order line item, such as a cleaning fee.

Here's a couple of examples of Upsells in the rental widget.

How to Configure Upsells

Upsells can be viewed and configured by going to Settings > Add-ons > Upsells from the PRP main navigation.

They work by configuring Upsell Groups. Upsell Groups allow you to put a set of Upsell products together, which will then always appear together in the rental widget. Upsell Groups are then assigned to rental products (which can be done in a number of flexible ways - outlined further below).

The benefit of this is that any changes to the group only need to made once. You don't need to go and update the upsell product list for each rental product. For example, in the "fashion solutions" list in the screenshot above - if a new product were to be added to the catalog, such as "Stiletto Stoppers", this could easily just be added to the existing Upsell Group, and all rental products with this group assigned would start showing the new product as an upsell option on the rental widget.

If some rental products should only have 1 upsell, then you just need to create an Upsell Group with only the one upsell product in it.

Upsell Group Configuration Options

Status (Enabled or not enabled)

Set the status of the Upsell Group (enabled/disabled). This will determine whether it's displayed within the rental widget on your website or not. You might disable it if you want to retain all your settings but not have it display on the website for a while.

Upsell Group Name

A name so you & your team can easily understand what the group represents. This is never displayed anywhere on your website or to customers.

Optional Title

Displayed as a heading above the upsell products within the rental widget.

Display Option

How the upsell products are displayed within the rental widget. Each product on separate row: Products displayed in a list stacked on top of each other. Cards in one row: Displayed beside each other in cards. On desktop it will display 2+ cards/products horizontally before wrapping, on mobile it will display on a single row that can be horizontally scrolled by swiping.

Priority

A number from 1 to 100, where 1 is high priority and 100 is low. This is only a factor if a rental product has multiple upsell groups assigned to it. The priority will determine the order that the upsell groups will display within the rental widget.

Hide until dates selected

Determines whether the upsells display when the rental product page first loads, or whether it will wait until the customer has selected dates in the rental calendar. There may be cases where you don't want to distract customers with the upsell options until they're really ready to book the rental. Selecting dates within the calendar indicates that the customer is close to adding to cart, so it can be a good time to reveal the upsell options.

Upsell products

Select the upsell products. These are typically not rental products. Rental products usually have their own availability which depends on dates. Rental calendars aren't shown for upsell products and hence rental products are often not suitable to add as upsells. Upsells are usually purchaseable, consumable products, or add-on services.

Upsell product configuration options

Show thumbnail: Whether the product's main photo is displayed as a thumbnail alongside the upsell product.

Mandatory: Whether the upsell is required. If mandatory, then it's automatically added to cart, without the customer needing to select it. It also can't be removed from the cart unless the rental product itself is removed first. Even when an upsell product is mandatory, it still might require the customer to select a variant (for example, the size).

Can choose variant: Whether a variant picker dropdown box displays beside the upsell product. If you want to fix the upsell option to a specific variant, then untick this option, and then select the specific variant for the upsell. This can be used in instances where you want customers to be able to select 1 or more of 1 variant, and 1 or more of another - you could add the same product to the upsell group more than once, untick 'can choose variant' and then select a different variant for each instance of the product.

Can update quantity: Displays a quantity toggler on the upsell product so customers can increase/decrease the quantity they want to purchase. If the product is also set to Mandatory then the minimum quantity will be 1.

Apply to

The rental products that this Upsell Group will be displayed on. You can assign the group to:

  • All rental products

  • Selected products: Choose specific rental products from your product catalog

  • Rule-based (specify conditions): Choose rental products dynamically, based on various rules such as tag, price, title, collection, vendor (i.e. brand) and more.
